Christmas '05

Though the intention is not to write this blog during holiday season or a trip..it is becoming more that way...:)

Seshadri (my buddy from U of H) and I just came back from a road trip to Arizona..

Day 1 - Drive from L.A to Page, AZ. We reached Page, AZ little around 10:30 a.m. on 23rd Dec. We took a guided trip to the Upper Antelope Canyon, a part of the Navajo Nation with Chief Tsosie - our wonderful guide. Antelope Canyon is a beautiful and peaceful place, hard to describe it in words. Its beauty struck us by awe and a wonderful place to photograph the nature at its best. We spend a little over an hour at the canyons looking at the sunlight play its way through the canyons. Chief Tsosie added his bit by playing the Native Indian Flute which was mesmerizing. We concluded the trip by learning two Indian words - Ya 'at' teeh, meaning Hello and 'Vegetarian', meaning 'Poor Hunters' :))

We continued our trip by visiting the Glen Canyon Dam and went on a short hike. We headed to Flagstaff for the night.

Day 2 - A very active day. Visited Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest. Walnut Canyon is a very interesting place to visit. This is a first time I am visiting a place where early settlers - Sinagua lived about 1000 years ago. They were the cliff dwellers. We took a 1 mile Island Trail which descends 900 feet and takes you through the homes built by the early settlers along the limestone overhangs. One interesting fact is that women have built all those homes.
Meteor Crater is a gigantic hole in the middle of the arid sandstone of the Arizona desert. It is big enough to fit 20 football fields inside. It is over a mile wide. We wrapped up our day with a trip to the Petrified forests. Petrified wood is fossilized wood. Minerals seeped into buried logs, replacing the original tissues with rock. At Petrified Forests you can witness fossils over 300 million years old.

Day 3 - Christmas Day & Happy Birthday Dad!!!

Visited the Grand Canyon - the grandest of all the canyons. We took the air plane tour of the canyon which lasted for an hour. The air tour takes a complete tour of the south and the north rim and you witness the Grand Canyon is a whole different angle. It is a must do when you visit Grand Canyon. We also saw the IMAX movie about the hidden secrets of the Grand Canyon which was equally amazing. We watched the Sunset at the Grand Canyon from the Grandview Point at an elevation of 7400 feet.

We drove back to L.A early Monday morning and I am getting ready to be back to the grind starting tomorrow.

Hope all of you had a great weekend...

Till Next,
~M
